No HitsuHina fan could speak of Retsu Unohana without a sense of awe. Without her sharp observation, nobody would have detected Aizen as the ultimate villain on time; without her swift cure, Hitsugaya and Hinamori's story would have ended that day when Aizen took his departure from Soul Society. The lady might be neutral with most people around her - she would probably cure an enemy if she sees a need - but it doesn't change the fact that she's a direct benefactor of HitsuHina's, once and for all.

In Bleach the anime, Unohana was seen by an unconscious Hinamori's side when Hitsugaya paid the latter a visit.

Judging by the nature of her profession, it should be safe to assume that Unohana is a very careful decision maker who is able to observe her surroundings more subjectively than most. As a result, if she didn't know the history between Hitsugaya and Hinamori at all, she wouldn't have asked such a favor out of Hitsugaya just because Hinamori was in a critical condition. Because she perceived Hitsugaya as the closest person to Hinamori, she trusted him to be the key to Hinamori's revival - a fact that Hitsugaya himself wasn't confident about.
